About Tenuta San Guido

Tenuta San Guido is an iconic wine estate located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. Established in the early 20th century by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, the estate covers approximately 2,500 hectares, of which around 100 hectares are dedicated to vineyards. The estate is best known as the birthplace of Sassicaia, a pioneering Super Tuscan wine that has played a transformative role in Italian winemaking. The name “Tenuta San Guido” derives from Saint Guido della Gherardesca, an ancestor of the family, reflecting the estate’s deep historical roots in the region.

The story of Tenuta San Guido began when Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, inspired by the great Bordeaux wines, planted Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc vines on the estate in the 1940s. Initially, the wine was produced for family consumption, but the first commercial vintage of Sassicaia was released in 1968. The wine quickly gained international acclaim for its elegance, structure, and unique expression of the Bolgheri terroir. Sassicaia’s success helped establish the Bolgheri DOC and paved the way for the Super Tuscan movement, which broke away from traditional Italian wine regulations to allow for more creative blends and techniques.

Today, Tenuta San Guido is managed by the Incisa della Rocchetta family, with Nicolò and Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta playing key roles in the estate’s operations. The estate’s vineyards are situated on stony, well-drained soils at varying elevations, benefiting from the coastal climate and cooling sea breezes. This unique terroir contributes to the complexity and finesse of the wines produced.

The estate’s flagship wine, Sassicaia, is composed primarily of Cabernet Sauvignon with a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. It is celebrated for its deep color, refined tannins, and layers of dark fruit, tobacco, and herbs. Sassicaia is aged in French oak barriques, which adds further complexity and aging potential. In addition to Sassicaia, Tenuta San Guido produces Guidalberto and Le Difese, two additional wines that showcase the estate’s commitment to quality and innovation. Guidalberto is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, offering a more approachable style, while Le Difese combines Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese, highlighting a distinctly Tuscan character.

Tenuta San Guido is also notable for its dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable agriculture. The estate maintains a strong commitment to preserving the natural landscape, which includes not only vineyards but also olive groves, woodlands, and the celebrated horse-breeding operation known as the Razza Dormello-Olgiata, famous for producing champion thoroughbreds.

Through a combination of tradition, innovation, and respect for the land, Tenuta San Guido has established itself as a benchmark for excellence in Italian wine. Its contribution to the international reputation of Bolgheri and the creation of the Super Tuscan category have left an enduring legacy. The estate continues to receive critical acclaim for its wines, which are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts around the world, solidifying its place among the most prestigious wine producers in Italy.
