About Ornellaia

Ornellaia is a distinguished wine estate located in the Bolgheri region of Tuscany, Italy. Established in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, Ornellaia was envisioned as a site to craft Bordeaux-style blends on the Tuscan coast, leveraging the unique terroir of the area. The estate’s proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea, combined with its diverse soils and microclimates, creates ideal conditions for cultivating classic Bordeaux grape varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot.

From the outset, Ornellaia’s philosophy has centered on expressing the character of its exceptional terroir through meticulous vineyard management and innovative winemaking. The estate’s vineyards, which cover approximately 115 hectares, are divided into distinct parcels, each carefully studied and cultivated according to its specific characteristics. This parcel-by-parcel approach allows for precise selection of grapes, ensuring that each component contributes optimally to the final blend.

Ornellaia’s flagship wine, simply named Ornellaia, is a blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The wine is celebrated for its elegance, structure, and complexity, often displaying aromas of dark fruit, spice, and a distinctive mineral quality. In addition to its flagship, Ornellaia produces Le Serre Nuove dell’Ornellaia, a second wine that offers a more approachable expression of the estate’s style, as well as Le Volte dell’Ornellaia, which combines estate-grown fruit with grapes sourced from select Tuscan vineyards.

Since its inception, Ornellaia has been at the forefront of innovation in the region. The estate employs sustainable viticultural practices, including organic farming methods and minimal intervention in the cellar, to preserve the integrity of the fruit and the environment. The winemaking team, led by estate director Axel Heinz, utilizes a combination of traditional and modern techniques, such as fermenting in both stainless steel and oak, and aging the wines in French oak barrels to achieve optimal balance and complexity.
