About Montevertine
Montevertine is a celebrated wine estate located in the heart of Tuscany’s Chianti Classico region, specifically in Radda in Chianti. Established in 1967 by Sergio Manetti, the estate began as a personal retreat, but soon evolved into a groundbreaking winery after the exceptional quality of its inaugural vintage drew critical acclaim. Today, Montevertine remains family-owned and is managed by Sergio’s son, Martino Manetti, who continues his father’s commitment to tradition and excellence.
The estate spans approximately 18 hectares of vineyards, situated at an altitude of 425 meters above sea level. The vineyards are planted predominantly to Sangiovese, the noble grape of Tuscany, with small amounts of Canaiolo and Colorino. Montevertine’s approach to viticulture is rooted in respect for the land and the environment; the estate practices organic farming, avoiding chemical fertilizers and herbicides to preserve the health of the soil and vines. All vineyard work, including harvesting, is done by hand to ensure the highest quality grapes.
Montevertine is best known for its unwavering dedication to Sangiovese and its decision to step outside the DOCG Chianti Classico regulations. In the early 1980s, the estate famously withdrew from the appellation in protest against the requirement to blend white grapes into red wines. This bold move allowed Montevertine to focus exclusively on red varieties, producing wines of purity and authenticity that express the unique terroir of Radda in Chianti.
The estate produces three main wines: Montevertine, Pian del Ciampolo, and Le Pergole Torte. Montevertine, the flagship wine, is a classic expression of Sangiovese blended with a small percentage of Canaiolo and Colorino. It is aged in large Slavonian oak casks, resulting in a wine of elegance, balance, and aging potential. Pian del Ciampolo, the entry-level wine, offers a fresher, more approachable style while maintaining the house’s high standards. Le Pergole Torte, first produced in 1977, is the estate’s top wine and one of the first pure Sangiovese wines from Tuscany. It is celebrated for its finesse, complexity, and longevity, with a distinctive label featuring artwork by Alberto Manfredi.
Winemaking at Montevertine is characterized by minimal intervention and a traditional approach. Fermentation takes place in concrete vats using native yeasts, and the wines are aged in large oak casks rather than small barriques, allowing the varietal character and terroir to shine through without excessive oak influence. The result is wines that are refined, transparent, and deeply expressive of their origin.
Montevertine’s legacy is built on a philosophy of authenticity, respect for tradition, and a relentless pursuit of quality. The estate’s wines are sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide, admired for their purity, elegance, and ability to age gracefully. By remaining true to its values and the singular character of Sangiovese, Montevertine has secured its place as one of the most influential and respected producers in Tuscany.
