Elvio Cogno is a celebrated wine producer based in the Langhe region of Piedmont, Italy, known for crafting exceptional Barolo wines. The estate is located in Novello, one of the eleven communes of Barolo, and is particularly famed for its vineyards in the Ravera cru, a site that has become synonymous with complexity and elegance in Barolo production. The history of Elvio Cogno dates back to the mid-20th century when Elvio, after years of experience as a winemaker and partner at the Marcarini estate in La Morra, decided to pursue his own vision. In the early 1990s, he acquired the Cascina Nuova farmhouse and its surrounding vineyards, laying the foundation for the family-run winery that bears his name.

The estate is now managed by Nadia Cogno, Elvio’s daughter, and her husband Valter Fissore, who have continued Elvio’s dedication to tradition while introducing innovative approaches to viticulture and winemaking. The vineyards cover approximately 15 hectares, primarily planted to Nebbiolo for Barolo, but also featuring Barbera, Dolcetto, and the rare Nascetta, a native white grape that Elvio Cogno helped revive. The Ravera vineyard, with its unique exposure and calcareous-clay soils, provides the backbone for the estate’s flagship Barolo wines, which are celebrated for their aromatic precision, depth, and longevity.

Elvio Cogno’s philosophy centers on respect for the land and the expression of terroir. The winery practices sustainable viticulture, minimizing chemical interventions and focusing on the health of the vines and soils. Harvesting is done by hand, and yields are kept low to ensure concentration and quality. In the cellar, the approach is one of minimal intervention: fermentation takes place in stainless steel, followed by extended aging in large Slavonian oak barrels, which allows the wines to develop complexity without overwhelming the character of the fruit or site.

The estate produces several Barolo wines, each reflecting a distinct aspect of the Ravera cru. The Barolo Ravera is a classic expression, marked by floral notes, red fruit, and a firm tannic structure, while the Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice comes from a specific parcel within Ravera, offering additional depth and aging potential. In addition to Barolo, Elvio Cogno crafts Barbera d’Alba, Dolcetto d’Alba, and Langhe Nascetta, the latter a testament to the family’s commitment to local traditions and biodiversity. The Nascetta, once nearly extinct, has found a new lease on life thanks to the efforts of Elvio Cogno, and today it is recognized as one of Piedmont’s most intriguing white wines.
