About Ca`Marcanda

Angelo Gaja undoubtedly represents the best image of Italian wine. In 1961 he took over the family winery, founded in 1859 in the Langhe hills. The Maremma area of Tuscany, south of Livorno, is one of the most dynamic wine regions in Italy. Ca'Marcanda, the Gaja family's wine estate, is located in the famous Bolgheri district, in the commune of Castagneto Carducci. The name of the winery comes from the Piedmontese dialect and means 'house of endless negotiations'. It refers to the hundreds of hours Angelo spent trying to convince the previous owners of the property to sell the estate, which had primarily been a field of olive and fruit trees, with only a few hectares of vineyards. Hot summer days in Bolgheri, cooled by the sea breeze and cool nights, create an ideal climate for the vines of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Syrah. The estate is characterized by two different types of soil - Terre Brune (black earth), mainly silt and clay, and Terre Chiare (white soil), which is richer in limestone and full of stones and pebbles. As in his native Piemonte, Angelo Gaja's goal is to produce wines true to their origins, reflecting the distinctive qualities of its unique terroir.
