About Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy

Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy is a historic wine estate located in the heart of Piedmont, Italy. With deep roots tracing back to the late 18th century, the estate has been owned by the di Gresy family since 1797. Today, the winery is managed by Alberto di Gresy, who has upheld the family’s dedication to crafting high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of their vineyards. The estate encompasses four properties: Martinenga in Barbaresco, Monte Aribaldo in Treiso, La Serra in Cassine, and Monte Colombo in Cassine, covering a total of about 45 hectares of vineyards.

The Martinenga vineyard is the crown jewel of the estate, situated in the Barbaresco appellation. This single vineyard is widely regarded as one of the finest sites in Barbaresco, producing elegant and complex Nebbiolo wines. The Martinenga cru is the only monopole in Barbaresco, meaning it is solely owned by the di Gresy family, providing them with complete control over the cultivation and vinification of its grapes. The estate produces three Barbaresco wines from Martinenga: Barbaresco Martinenga, Barbaresco Gaiun, and Barbaresco Camp Gros, each expressing different facets of the vineyard’s character.

In addition to Nebbiolo, Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy cultivates a variety of other grapes across its properties, including Barbera, Dolcetto, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc. This diversity allows the estate to offer a broad portfolio of wines, ranging from classic reds to fresh, aromatic whites. The Monte Aribaldo vineyard, for example, is particularly well-suited for white varieties and produces notable Sauvignon and Chardonnay wines.

The winemaking philosophy at Marchesi di Gresy is centered on respect for tradition while embracing innovation where it enhances quality. Sustainable vineyard practices are a priority, with careful attention paid to soil health, vine balance, and minimal intervention in the cellar. The aim is to let each vineyard site express its unique characteristics, resulting in wines that are both authentic and refined. The use of both large traditional oak casks and smaller French barriques allows for nuanced aging, tailored to the specific requirements of each wine.

Marchesi di Gresy wines are celebrated for their balance, elegance, and purity of fruit. The Barbaresco wines, in particular, are known for their aromatic complexity, silky tannins, and remarkable aging potential. The estate’s commitment to quality is evident in every bottle, from their flagship Barbaresco Martinenga to their approachable Langhe Nebbiolo and vibrant whites. The estate welcomes visitors to its historic Martinenga property, offering tastings and tours that showcase both the beauty of the vineyards and the meticulous care that goes into every stage of production.

Over the years, Tenute Cisa Asinari dei Marchesi di Gresy has earned a reputation among collectors and wine lovers for producing some of Piedmont’s most expressive and terroir-driven wines. With a legacy spanning more than two centuries, the estate continues to honor its heritage while looking to the future, ensuring that each vintage captures the essence of the land and the passion of the di Gresy family.
