About Chateau Gruaud Larose
In 1865 the estate was divided between the Balguerie and Sarget, Saint-Julien. This generated two wines: Gruaud Larose-Bethmann and Gruaud Larose-Sarget. In 1917, D sir Cordier Sarget bought all the parts of his family, and years before the start of the Second World War he also acquired the participation of the Bethmann family. On November 8, 1935, D sir Cordier, owner of Gruaud Larose-Sarget, took the opportunity to buy Gruaud Larose-Faure and rebuilt a farm covering 137 hectares (68 of them vineyards). The Suez Cordier company bought the farm in 1983 and 10 years later, in 1993, Gruaud Larose was sold to the Alcatel Alsthom industrial group. In 1997 the Merlaut family, already owners of several estates in the M doc, bought Ch teau Gruaud Larose, being its current owner. This philosophy has passed from father to son and is part of the current spirit of Gruaud Larose. The soil of the vineyards of this winery is composed of humus, clay, sand, and pebbles left by the Garonne River. The subsoil is made up of red, yellow, and blue clay, sand, and smooth and uniform worn pebbles. The territory benefits from a particular microclimate that is favourable for the vine. The soil, by nature, limits water retention and the summer period, which is very hot and dry from July to September, is decisive for the good ripening of the grapes. Today, the Gruaud Larose vineyard is made up of the noble varieties of Bordeaux, that is, Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%), Cabernet Franc (7%) and Petit Verdot (3%).
