About Poggio di Sotto
Poggio di Sotto is a celebrated winery located in the picturesque hills of Montalcino, Tuscany, an area globally recognized for producing some of Italy’s most esteemed wines. Founded in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, the estate quickly gained a reputation for its meticulous approach to viticulture and winemaking, focusing exclusively on the Sangiovese grape. The property covers approximately 32 hectares, with 10 hectares dedicated to vineyards and the remainder to woodland and olive groves, all situated on the southern slopes of Montalcino between 200 and 400 meters above sea level. The unique terroir, characterized by a mix of galestro, clay, and limestone soils, combined with a favorable microclimate influenced by both the Orcia River and Mount Amiata, provides ideal conditions for cultivating Sangiovese of exceptional quality.
From the outset, Poggio di Sotto has prioritized low yields, organic farming practices, and a deep respect for the land. The vineyards are managed without the use of synthetic chemicals, and all work is done by hand, ensuring careful selection of grapes at every stage. The estate’s philosophy centers on expressing the purest character of Sangiovese, with an emphasis on elegance, complexity, and longevity. This commitment extends to the cellar, where traditional winemaking methods prevail. Fermentation occurs in open-topped wooden vats using only indigenous yeasts, and the wines are aged for extended periods in large Slavonian oak casks. This patient, non-interventionist approach allows the nuances of each vintage and vineyard parcel to shine through in the final wines.
Poggio di Sotto produces three main wines: Rosso di Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino, and Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. The Rosso di Montalcino is notable for its depth, structure, and aromatic complexity, often rivaling the quality of many Brunellos from other producers. The Brunello di Montalcino is lauded for its balance, refined tannins, and remarkable aging potential, while the Riserva is crafted only in exceptional years from the estate’s oldest vines, offering profound depth and complexity. Across the range, the wines are characterized by vibrant acidity, intense yet delicate fruit, and a distinctive mineral backbone, hallmarks of the estate’s terroir and winemaking ethos.
In 2011, Poggio di Sotto was acquired by ColleMassari, a well-respected group with a portfolio of prestigious Tuscan estates. Under their stewardship, the estate has maintained its original vision and standards, continuing to produce wines that are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs worldwide. The estate remains committed to sustainable agriculture and traditional craftsmanship, ensuring that each bottle reflects both the heritage of Montalcino and the singular qualities of its vineyards.
Today, Poggio di Sotto stands as a benchmark for Sangiovese in Montalcino, embodying a harmonious blend of tradition, terroir, and innovation. The estate’s unwavering dedication to quality, combined with its unique site and thoughtful stewardship, has secured its place among the most respected wine producers in Tuscany, offering wines that are celebrated for their purity, finesse, and expressive character.
