About Hospices de Beaune

Most of the vines of the Domain are made up of Premiers and Grands Crus. They are essentially grouped around Beaune (Auxey-Duresses, Beaune, Meursault, Monthelie, Pommard, Pernand-Vergelesses, Puligny-Montrachet, Savigny-l s-Beaune and Volnay) because of the historical location of the hospital. They bear prestigious names: Beaune Clos des Avaux Premier Cru, Corton Grand Cru The Hospices de Beaune are also owners of vines on the C te de Nuits, with the Grands Crus Mazis-Chambertin and Clos de la Roche and in the M connais since 1994, with parcels of Pouilly-Fuiss . The average age of the vines is 34 years. The production area managed by the Domain varies as a function of the donations, vines uprooted or replanted, but approximates to 60 hectares, of which 50 are dedicated to Pinot Noir and the rest to Chardonnay. Current grape varieties, carefully selected to produce quality wines, are exclusively Pinot Noir for red wines and Chardonnay for whites. These vines are, moreover, the only ones allowed in Burgundy for the production of Grands Crus. The cuvees are therefore the result of the harmonious blending of different climates, which contributes to creating the originality of the wines of the Domaine Viticole des Hospices de Beaune. The Appellation Beaune Premier Cru, for instance, is expressed through 10 cuvees, amongst which the cuvee Nicolas Rolin results from the blending of 5 climates: Les Cent Vignes, Les Gen ts, Les Bressandes, Les Gr ves, and Les Teurons. At each uprooting of vines, the land is left to rest for four to six years, depending on its state of health.
