About Donnhoff

Dönnhoff is a distinguished wine estate located in the Nahe region of Germany, known for producing some of the country’s finest Rieslings. The estate, based in the village of Oberhausen an der Nahe, has been in the Dönnhoff family for over 250 years. Today, it is managed by Helmut Dönnhoff, who took over from his father in the 1970s, and his son Cornelius, who has become increasingly involved in recent years. Their meticulous approach in the vineyard and cellar has elevated the estate to international acclaim.

The Dönnhoff estate comprises about 28 hectares of vines, most of which are Riesling, though small plantings of Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, and Müller-Thurgau are also cultivated. The vineyards are spread across some of the Nahe’s most celebrated sites, including Oberhäuser Brücke, Niederhäuser Hermannshöhle, Norheimer Dellchen, and Schlossböckelheimer Felsenberg. These sites are characterized by their unique soils, ranging from volcanic porphyry and slate to loess and clay, allowing for wines with remarkable complexity and expression of terroir.

In the vineyard, Dönnhoff practices sustainable viticulture, with careful attention to canopy management, yield reduction, and hand harvesting. The aim is always to bring in perfectly ripe, healthy fruit that reflects the nuances of each site and vintage. The estate’s philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention, letting nature and the vineyard speak through the wines. Helmut and Cornelius Dönnhoff are particularly attentive to the timing of harvest, often making multiple passes through the vineyards to select grapes at optimal ripeness for each style of wine, from dry to lusciously sweet.

In the cellar, Dönnhoff employs traditional winemaking techniques. Fermentation occurs in a mix of stainless steel tanks and large old oak casks, known as Stückfass, which help maintain freshness and purity of fruit while allowing the wines to develop texture and complexity. The wines are typically fermented with indigenous yeasts and aged on their lees to enhance mouthfeel and aromatic depth. Dönnhoff produces a range of wines, from bone-dry Grosses Gewächs (GG) bottlings to Kabinett, Spätlese, Auslese, and even noble sweet Beerenauslese and Trockenbeerenauslese, each reflecting the character of its origin.

Dönnhoff’s Rieslings are celebrated for their balance, clarity, and precision. The dry wines are marked by their mineral backbone, vibrant acidity, and expressive fruit, while the sweeter styles display layered aromas, finesse, and remarkable aging potential. The estate’s flagship sites, particularly Hermannshöhle and Brücke, consistently yield wines that are benchmarks for the Nahe and Germany as a whole.

Beyond their technical excellence, Dönnhoff wines are valued for their ability to convey a sense of place. Each bottle tells the story of its vineyard, vintage, and the hands that crafted it. The estate’s commitment to quality, respect for tradition, and pursuit of excellence have secured its place among the world’s elite wine producers. Dönnhoff continues to inspire wine lovers and collectors with each new release, offering a taste of the Nahe’s unique landscape and the family’s enduring legacy.
