About Donnhoff

Weingut Hermann D nnhoff owns vineyards in qualified estates such as Hermansh hle (with 70-year-old vines) and Br cke. The winery is a member of the VDP (Great Payments of Germany) Riesling & Burgunder. The geology of the middle Nahe is notably shaped by its old clay-slate formations and rich volcanic soils. The concentration of porphyry and melaphyre stone in and around our old Oberhausen vineyards Kieselberg and Felsenberg, for example help provide the perfect berry base for our Gutsriesling. The high concentration of grey slate in the Oberhauser Leistenberg vineyards enhances the distinctive character of our Tonschiefer wine. By contrast, our Grauburgunder and Weissburgunder (Pinot Gris and Pinot Blanc) thrive in the soils of our more clay-rich vineyards. The periods that the wine spends in one or the other depends on the characteristics of the vintage. Grapes are always picked by hand at D nnhoff over two to three passes through each vineyard which covers an area of 28 hectares. Varietals consist of 80 %, pinot blanc and pinot Gris 20 % and the age varies between 15 65 years. To preserve laser-like focus and clarity in the wines, the grapes are pressed as soon as possible within 3 hours of picking. Wines are fermented in traditional German casks (1200 L stuck and 2400 L Doppel stuck) as well as stainless steel with spontaneous fermentations. Donnhoff s cellar is unique in its capacity to hold all of its production entirely in stainless steel or in cask, allowing for the ideal levage for any wine at any point during a vintage.
