About Silvio Grasso

Silvio Grasso is a family-owned winery based in the heart of Piedmont’s Langhe region, specifically in La Morra, one of the most prestigious areas for Barolo production. The estate was founded in 1927, when Luigi Grasso began cultivating vineyards, but it was Silvio Grasso, his son, who started bottling wines under the family name in 1980. Today, the winery is run by Paolo Grasso, the third generation, who continues the family’s dedication to producing expressive, terroir-driven wines that reflect the unique characteristics of their vineyards.

The estate covers approximately 14 hectares of vineyards, primarily planted with Nebbiolo, but also featuring small parcels of Barbera and Dolcetto. The Grasso family’s approach combines respect for tradition with thoughtful innovation. Vineyard work is guided by sustainable practices, careful canopy management, and low yields to ensure concentration and balance in the fruit. The diversity of vineyard sites, some with vines over 40 years old, allows for the production of several single-vineyard Barolo wines, each showcasing the nuances of La Morra’s varied soils and microclimates.

In the cellar, Paolo Grasso employs a balanced winemaking philosophy that honors classic Barolo methods while embracing select modern techniques. Fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with extended maceration to extract color, tannin, and aromatic complexity. Aging takes place in a mix of French and Slavonian oak barrels, with the choice of vessel and length of maturation tailored to each wine’s structure and style. This careful approach results in Barolos that are accessible in their youth but possess the depth and structure to age gracefully.

Silvio Grasso’s portfolio highlights the expressive potential of Nebbiolo. The Barolo “Tradizione” offers a quintessential La Morra profile—elegant, aromatic, and finely textured—while single-vineyard bottlings such as Barolo “Bricco Luciani,” “Gancia,” and “Giachini” reveal distinct personalities shaped by their specific terroirs. The estate’s Barbera d’Alba and Dolcetto d’Alba, crafted with the same attention to detail, provide vibrant, fruit-driven alternatives that showcase the diversity of Piedmont’s indigenous varieties.

Over the decades, Silvio Grasso has earned a reputation for consistency, quality, and authenticity. The winery’s Barolos are celebrated for their balance of power and finesse, marked by characteristic floral notes, red fruit, and subtle spice. Each wine reflects the Grasso family’s deep connection to their land and their commitment to expressing the essence of La Morra’s vineyards. With a focus on sustainable viticulture and sensitive winemaking, Paolo Grasso continues to guide the estate forward, ensuring that each bottle bearing the Silvio Grasso name is a true reflection of its origin and heritage.
