About Matteo Correggia

Matteo Correggia is a northern Italian wine producer located in Piedmont. The estate produces Barbera d'Alba and Langhe wines, but is best known for its Roero DOCG wines from Arneis and Nebbiolo. Matteo Correggia inherited the family's Roero estate in 1985 and helped heighten the wine region's quality reputation. After a fatal vineyard accident in 2001, the estate is now run by the late Matteo's wife, Ornella, and winemaker Luca Rostagno. The vineyards span 20 hectares (50 acres) in the Piedmont region with vines planted primarily to clay and silt soils. Varieties produced include Barbera, Nebbiolo, Arneis, and Brachetto, as well as international varieties for production of the estate's Langhe Biano Matteo Correggia, made from 100 percent Sauvignon Blanc, and the Langhe Rosso Le Marne Grigie Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Cabernet Franc. Metteo Correggia is perhaps best known for its Roero Riserva Roche d'Ampsej wine, produced from a small plot of Nebbiolo vines that range from 50 to 60 years old. The grapes are harvested by hand and macerate six to eight days before fermentation in barriques. The wine ages 18 months in 100 percent new oak, then another 24 months in bottle. All wines are bottled on the premises, in dedicated areas, where a large warehouse for stocking the bottles underground is attacched. Only some 6000 bottles of are produced annually.
