About Domaine Sylvie Esmonin

Domaine Sylvie Esmonin is a family-run wine estate located in Gevrey-Chambertin, at the heart of Burgundy’s Côte de Nuits. The domaine traces its roots back to the early 20th century, with the Esmonin family cultivating vineyards and producing wine for several generations. Originally, the grapes were sold to local négociants, but it was Sylvie Esmonin’s father, Michel, who began bottling under the family name in the 1980s. Sylvie took the reins in 1988, bringing both a respect for tradition and a progressive vision to the estate.

The domaine covers approximately six hectares, with holdings in some of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most esteemed lieux-dits, including Clos Saint-Jacques, Les Champeaux, and Les Estournelles Saint-Jacques. Pinot Noir is the sole grape variety, and the estate is known for its meticulous vineyard management. Sylvie Esmonin practices lutte raisonnée, favoring sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention. She has gradually shifted toward more organic practices, focusing on soil health and biodiversity, though the vineyards are not formally certified organic.

In the cellar, Sylvie Esmonin’s approach is influenced by her experiences working with legendary figures such as Jacques Seysses of Domaine Dujac and the late Henri Jayer. She employs a significant proportion of whole cluster fermentation, particularly in warmer vintages, which contributes to the aromatic complexity and structure of her wines. Fermentation takes place in open wooden vats, and extraction is managed carefully to preserve the purity of fruit and finesse. The wines are aged in French oak barrels, with a notable percentage of new oak—often up to 80% for the top cuvées like Clos Saint-Jacques—imparting depth and polish without overwhelming the character of the terroir.

Sylvie Esmonin’s wines are celebrated for their vibrancy, energy, and expressive aromatics. They showcase the signature power and structure of Gevrey-Chambertin while retaining elegance and balance. The Gevrey-Chambertin Clos Saint-Jacques, in particular, is highly sought after, known for its layered complexity, refined tannins, and remarkable aging potential. The domaine also produces village-level Gevrey-Chambertin and a Bourgogne Rouge, offering accessibility and value alongside the prestige of the premier crus.

Under Sylvie’s stewardship, the domaine has maintained a strong sense of family identity and continuity. She works closely with her daughter, Claire, who has begun to take on a larger role in both vineyard and cellar, ensuring that the estate’s legacy continues. The wines of Domaine Sylvie Esmonin are allocated to top restaurants and collectors worldwide, reflecting their limited production and consistent quality. The estate remains a benchmark for authentic, terroir-driven Burgundy, marrying tradition with thoughtful innovation in every vintage.
