Felsina Berardenga is a celebrated wine estate located in the southeastern part of the Chianti Classico appellation, near the town of Castelnuovo Berardenga in Tuscany, Italy. Established in 1966 by Domenico Poggiali, Felsina has grown from a modest family-run operation into one of the leading producers in the region, known for its dedication to quality, tradition, and the unique terroir of Berardenga. The estate covers approximately 500 hectares, with about 90 hectares under vine, predominantly planted to Sangiovese, the signature grape of Chianti Classico.

The philosophy at Felsina centers on expressing the distinctiveness of their land through meticulous vineyard management and minimal intervention in the cellar. The vineyards benefit from a diverse range of soils, including clay, limestone, and sandstone, as well as varying altitudes and exposures, which contribute to the complexity and character of the wines. The Chianti Classico Riserva and the flagship single-vineyard bottling, Rancia, are benchmarks for the region, celebrated for their depth, elegance, and aging potential. Rancia, sourced from a historic vineyard with limestone-rich soils, showcases the power and finesse that Sangiovese can achieve in Berardenga. Another notable wine is Fontalloro, which comes from vineyards straddling the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi appellations. Fontalloro is a pure Sangiovese that captures the essence of Felsina’s terroir and winemaking style.

In addition to their Sangiovese-based wines, Felsina produces a small amount of white wine from the indigenous Trebbiano and Malvasia grapes, as well as Vin Santo, a traditional Tuscan dessert wine. The estate’s olive groves yield high-quality extra virgin olive oil, further reflecting their commitment to local agricultural traditions.

Felsina’s winemaking team, led by Giuseppe Mazzocolin and enologist Franco Bernabei, emphasizes a balance between tradition and innovation. Fermentations are carried out in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, and aging takes place in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and smaller French oak barrels, depending on the wine.
