About Ron Zacapa
Ron Zacapa Centenario is a premium rum produced in Guatemala and is considered one of the best in the world. Due to its aging process, which takes place in Quetzaltenango at 2,300 meters above sea level, it receives its particular aroma and intense flavour. Another of its main characteristics is its base of concentrated sugar cane juice or virgin honey, instead of the traditional molasses. The rum owes its name to the Guatemalan city of Zacapa. Made in 1976 to celebrate the municipality's first centenary, it quickly became available for purchase in many countries around the world. This distillate, awarded on different occasions as the best rum in the world, has become the Guatemalan product with the most presence in the international market. The solera system is used for its complex aging process. Rums of different ages are mixed and aged in a sequence of four types of barrels, which have previously-stored whiskeys, sweet sherry and Pedro Xim nez wines. The rum rests in French oak barrels, which originally contained cognac. The slow maturation gives the alcohol its peculiar richness in fruity aromas and flavours, becoming a tasting product. That is why it is recommended to serve alone, in a not very open glass and with a large ice cube that dissolves gradually to prevent the drink from running down. There are different theories about the origin of this distillate. Among the different etymological hypotheses, the one that places its origin in Barbados stands out.
